MACOMB, Ill. - With Veteran's Day on Sunday, the Leatherneck Football program wanted to pay tribute to all veterans and in the process help the Fallen Soldiers Scholarship Program. Western will debut a new camouflage jersey this Saturday (Nov. 10) in the home finale against Youngstown State.
The home purple jersey will feature brown/tan colored camouflage numbers on front, back and shoulders, a camouflage stripe down both sides and camouflage trim around the collar. The Leathernecks name is in white across the front of the jersey and centered across the shoulder area is the anchor logo. The jerseys, purchased for the football program by the Western Illinois Foundation Office, were specially designed for the Leathernecks by adidas.
Following Saturday's game, those jerseys will be on sale to the general public. The cost of the jersey is $125, with $25 of that purchase going towards the Fallen Soldiers Scholarship program. Fans interested in purchasing the jerseys can call the Athletics Department at (309) 298-1190.
"The Leatherneck Football team is honored to celebrate Veteran's Day (on Sunday) and the Fallen Soldiers Scholarship program by wearing the specially made adidas camouflage jerseys this Saturday. Our Athletics Department and University has a strong tradition with the military, and the great honor of being able to use the Leatherneck nickname," said head coach Mark Hendrickson. "I'd like to thank the Western Illinois University Foundation Office for purchasing the jerseys. We will be proud to take the field this weekend wearing our uniform to honor all who have served and currently serve in the military."
The Fallen Soldiers Scholarship Fund was started in honor of two WIU alumni who were killed in the line of duty, Captain Derek Dobogai and Lieutenant Colonel Robert Baldwin. Western Illinois University's Employee Wellness Committee, the Veterans Resource Center, and the WIU Foundation have joined together to sponsor the first Fallen Soldiers 5K Run/Walk, which will be held on Saturday at 8 a.m., beginning and ending on the east lawn of the WIU Spencer Student Recreation Center.
The entry fee is $20 per person and will be accepted from
7-7:30 a.m. Participants will receive a t-shirt and finisher medal; other
prizes will be awarded to winners in a variety of categories, including overall
race finish, gender, age group, and winning team. Money raised will be directed
toward the WIU Fallen Soldiers Scholarship Fund, which supports veterans and
service members currently enrolled at Western. Additional donations are
welcome. For more information on the run, contact Holly Fecht at (309)
