MACOMB, Ill. - The Western Illinois Fighting Leatherneck cross country team competed at the NCAA Midwest Regional meet on Friday (Nov. 9) on the campus of Missouri State University.

The Leathernecks ran a full men's team and two members of the womens team, Alycia Thurston and Lydia Smith.

The men were paced by Michael Castel who finished 63rd overall. Castel bettered his time from last season at the Midwest Regional running it over a minute faster. In 2011, he ran it in 33:21.13 as compared to today, 31:57.33.

"The men had a very good season, but we were really challenged in the championship season," said third-year head coach David Beauchem.

The women's team was led by Alycia Thurston who finished 96th overall individually.

"Today was difficult, the most challenging races of the season," said coach Beauchem. "Alycia was in great position with 800 meters to go and just couldn't hold it."

63. Michael Castel - 31:57.33
86. Chase Marlow - 32:35.64
105. Zach Wiedeman - 32:57.95
164. Mark Holt - 34:29.54
173. Ryan Wojdyla - 35:01.01

96. Alycia Thurston - 22:42.39
145. Lydia Smith - 23:37.19

Coach Beauchem reflected on the season as a whole.

"We made progress, but there is a lot we need to do to be a top three Summit League team and a top 15 Midwest Regional team."
