PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Redshirt-freshman linebacker J.J. Raffelson (Lake Zurich/Lake Zurich) received votes for each of the top five placing in the final tally for the 2012 Jerry Rice Award, presented by The Sports Network. The Western Illinois redshirt-freshman finished 15th in the final balloting for the National Freshman of the Year Award, announced on Monday night (Dec. 17).
Raffelson received one vote each for first, second and third place. He received five votes for fourth place and four more for fifth place, totaling 26 points. Raffelson was only 26 points shy of a 'Top 10' finish.
Quarterback John Robertson of Villanova received 56 first-place votes and 412 total points. Fellow Missouri Valley Football Conference-member Sawyer Kollmorgen, quarterback from Northern Iowa, was second with 361 points (25 first-place votes). Linebacker T.J. Lally from South Dakota State, the only other MVFC finalist, came in seventh place.
In
his first year as starting middle linebacker, Raffelson earned Honorable
Mention All-MVFC accolades. He recorded 105 stops overall, including four for a
loss. Five times during his rookie year he reached double-digits in tackles. He
stands in a tie for 33rd nationally averaging 9.6 tackles per game, and among
all freshman nationally has the third-most tackles.
