FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Western Illinois women's basketball fell 80-49 at Fort Wayne on Sunday (Dec. 30) afternoon. The loss evens the Leathernecks' Summit League record 1-1 and brings their overall mark to 7-6. Fort Wayne is now 5-9 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
The Mastodons used two threes to get back in the game and eventually tied it up 10-10 with 13:45 left to play in the first. Fort Wayne took it from there outscoring the Leatherneck offense 25-10. The scoring drive included five threes and sent Western to the locker room trailing 35-20.
The Leathernecks could not slow down Fort Wayne's offense in the second half allowing them to lead by as much as 33 points, and a game total of 21 turnovers hurt any hopes of a second half comeback.
Western shot 27.9 percent from field goal range, 33.3 percent from beyond the arc and 73.1 percent from the charity stripe in the contest, while Fort Wayne posted a field goal percentage of 49.2, a three-point percentage of 52.4 and a free throw percentage of 91.7.
Luke led the Leatherneck offense scoring 12 points. She has now scored in double figures in the team's last four games.
Joining her in double figures was Saule Kontautaite with 10. Michele Salvatori and Luke pulled down a team-high four rebounds apiece. Michelle Maher and Salvatori each dished out a pair of assists to pace the squad.
Three Mastodons reached double figures including Amanda Hyde with 25, Erin Murphy with 21 and Stefanie Mauk with 17.
Western Illinois returns to Summit League action on Saturday (Jan. 5) at IUPUI. The game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. Central (3 p.m. Eastern).
