INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Western Illinois women's basketball fell in its second consecutive game to IUPUI 55-36 on Saturday (Jan. 5) afternoon. The loss brings the Leathernecks to a Summit League mark of 1-2 and an overall record of 7-7, while IUPUI is now 2-1 in league play and 8-7 overall.
After Western held a 12-8 advantage at the 12:37 mark in the first half, fueled by a Michele Salvatori three and pair of Ashley Luke layups, the Jaguars went on a 19-0 run to take over the contest. The Leathernecks did not end the scoring drought until the 5:43 mark with a layup from Charnelle Reed.
The Leathernecks scored their remaining points in the first half at the charity stripe, netting six, and headed into the locker room trailing the Jaguars by a score of 34-20.
In the second half, the Jaguars outscored the Leathernecks 21-16 and cruised to a 19-point final victory. Fifteen of Western's 36 total points, a season low, came from the free throw line and the squad uncharacteristically sunk just one three in the contest shooting 7.1 percent from long range.
"The way the game was called made it incredibly physical," head coach JD Gravina said. "They took us out of everything like they wanted to do. We couldn't cut through the lane and every time we put the ball on the floor they were all over us. We just have to toughen up there."
Rebecca Henricson paced the Leathernecks in points with nine and steals with two, along with Jackie Rieger who also swiped two. Salvatori pulled down a team-high seven rebounds in the game, three of which came from the offensive end of the court. Leading the team in blocks were Michelle Maher and Salvatori recording two apiece. Maher also dished out a team-high two assists.
Western shot 23.3 percent from field goal range, 7.1 percent from three-point range and 60.0 percent from the free throw line, while IUPUI posted a field goal percentage of 33.3, a three-point percentage of 23.1 and a 57.1 free throw percentage.
The Leathernecks return to Western Hall for a nonconference matchup against Chicago State on Tuesday (Jan. 8). The squad resumes Summit League play on Saturday (Jan. 12) afternoon when it plays host to Omaha.
