HOMEWOOD, Ill. - Western Illinois men's tennis evened its 2013 record at 1-1 by defeating Chicago State 6-1 at H-F Racquet Club on Sunday morning.
A trio of freshmen, Christoph Haertel, Bradley Holt and Max Cederkall led the way for the Leathernecks, as each picked up victories in both singles and doubles competition.
In No. 2 doubles play, Haertel and Holt combined to win by an 8-3 margin, while Cederkall teamed with Brandon Meeker at third singles to also win 8-3.
Haertel also won in top singles action, 7-6 (0), 6-3, as did Holt at third singles, by a 6-1, 6-2 margin.
"The best player on the court today, for either team, was Brad Holt, who picked up easy wins for us at #3 singles and #2 doubles," head coach Chris Kane said. "Brad was bombing his serves and groundstrokes today. His play showed the potential we see in Brad to become a great player at Western."
Cederkall picked up his second win of the morning at No. 5 singles, 7-5, 6-2.
Two-time all-league selection Patrick Hammers added his first win of the year in a battle at No. 2 singles, 4-6, 7-6 (2), 6-1, while sophomore transfer Chris Bunch picked up his first spring victory as a Leatherneck at sixth singles, 7-6 (5), 6-1.
"Patrick Hammers showed the grit I expect of him as a veteran and a captain. Down 6-2, 4-2, 30-love, Patrick clawed his way back into the match, and won in three sets going away," Kane added. "Chris Bunch played his first Division I collegiate dual match at #6 singles, and gave us a big 7-6, 6-1 victory that staked us to a 3-0 lead. It was a great beginning to Chris' WIU career."
Western rounds out its three-match road swing on Sunday at Valparaiso, slated to begin at noon.
