Western Illinois Falls to 2-4 Overall After Day Two at the Bama Bash

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Leatherneck softball dropped two contests at the Bama Bash on Saturday (Feb. 23). Western fell 6-0 to No. 1/2 Alabama and 6-1 in the nightcap against Winthrop. The losses bring the squad's overall record to 2-4 on the season.

Game #1 Saturday, Feb. 23 at 4 p.m.
Alabama 6, Western Illinois 0

No. 1/2 Alabama used a single up the middle to stake an early 1-0 lead over the Leathernecks in the top of the first and never looked back recording a 6-0 final win.

The Western Illinois defense held the Crimson Tide scoreless in the second, but the Alabama offense awoke in the third plating four runs on three hits and an error. The rally was fueled by a two-run home run from Jadyn Spencer.

In the bottom of the third, Karissa Kouchis drew a one-out walk and Sammy Marshall followed with an infield single marking the first Leatherneck hit of the game. The pair moved up to second and third on an error, then Lia Romeo was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two away. Alabama recorded a strikeout to keep the Leathernecks off the board.

Teagan Walsh came in to pitch in relief and held the Crimson Tide scoreless in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

Alabama used a single up the middle to notch its final run of the game in the top of the seventh and retired Western in order in the bottom half of the inning to put the 6-0 final victory in the books.

The Leathernecks tallied three hits to Alabama's nine. Marshall went 1-for-4 at the plate, while Megg Kelly and Emma Jarrell each went 1-for-3. Recording the lone stolen base in the contest for Western was Marshall.

Starting pitcher Kelsey Michelini was tagged with the loss in the circle bringing her record to 1-2. In her 3.0 innings of work she allowed five runs, four of them earned, and recorded a strikeout. Walsh pitched 4.0 innings allowing just one earned run and fanning two. Alabama's Leslie Jury tossed a complete game, three-hitter bringing her record to 5-0.

Game #2 Saturday, Feb. 23 at 6 p.m.
Winthrop 6, Western Illinois 1

In the nightcap, Western Illinois saw it's early lead diminish as Winthrop came back to record a 6-1 final victory over the Leathernecks.

Sammy Marshall opened the first frame with a double to left field and came around to score on a Lia Romeo rocket single down the left line. Western then loaded the bases on a Monica Rondon single up the middle and Megg Kelly walk, however the Winthrop defense recorded a pop out to end the inning.

Western's lead was erased in the second when the Eagles scored three runs. After three walks loaded the bases, Teja Durante knocked a triple to left center to notch three runs batted in.

Winthrop went added an insurance run in the third and two more in the sixth, while keeping the Leatherneck offense off the board despite several scoring chances. Western stranded 10 on base in the game to Winthrop's eight and had three bases loaded opportunities.

Pacing the Leathernecks offensively was Marshall who was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate and stole two bags bringing her season total to 6-for-6 on the basepaths. Romeo also had a multiple hit game going 2-for-4 with the lone run batted in. Rondon, Teagan Walsh and Alex Pflieger each had one hit apiece.

Kacyee Hart took the loss in the circle pitching a total of 2.1 innings. She allowed four runs, all earned, and recorded two strikeouts. In her 3.1 innings of work, Walsh notched three strikeouts and did not allow an earned run. Kelsey Michelini closed out the contest tossing 0.1 innings. Winthrop's Sutton Watson earned the complete game win bringing her record to 4-1 on the season.

Western Illinois is back in action on Sunday (Feb. 24) in its final contest at the Bama Bash against Big Ten affiliate Iowa. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
