SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Western Illinois baseball dropped the first game of the weekend to the Missouri State Bears 3-2 on Friday afternoon (Mar. 15). The pitching duel saw both starting pitchers throw eight innings each, while only allowing a combined four earned runs.

Western starter John White (0-3) threw 102 pitches over his career high eight-inning outing. The righty gave up only six hits and two earned runs while striking out two.

Missouri State All-American pitcher Nick Petree (3-0) struck out nine batters while allowing five hits and two earned runs. The two earned runs given up by Petree matches what he had allowed in his previous 25-innings of work.

The game was scoreless until the top of the fifth inning when the Leathernecks put two across to take an early lead. Travis Stafford singled and Zack Burling walked to put two runners on. Stafford and Burling both scored on a two RBI single by Brent Turner.

The Bears answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth inning. Missouri State got two singles in the inning and capitalized on a Leatherneck throwing error to tie the contest at 2-2.

Missouri State got their final run in the bottom half of the seventh inning. Travis McComack hit an RBI single through the left side of the field to score Keenen Maddox. The Bears would hold Western scoreless over the final two innings to seal the 3-2 victory.

The Leathernecks got two hits in the game from both Turner and Jameson Henning, respectfully. Henning hit his team high fourth double of the year for the Purple & Gold in the top of the first inning.

With projected bad weather in the Springfield area on Sunday (Mar. 17), the Leathernecks and Bears will now play a doubleheader starting tomorrow afternoon (Mar. 16) at 1 p.m., instead of single games on Saturday and Sunday.

Western will start Riley Perry in the first game and Tom Constand in the finale.
