Leathernecks Fall to Mavs, Jackrabbits

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Western Illinois women's tennis struggled on Friday (Mar. 15) against Nebraska-Omaha and South Dakota State. 

The Leathernecks lost both matches by 7-0 tallies. Western concluded the first conference trip at 0-4 in the Summit League cluster in Kansas City. 

Early on in the day the Leathernecks took on the Mavs of Omaha. At number one singles it was Alex Tran defeating Yessenia Mejia 6-1, 6-0. Number two singles was Elana Berdichevsky falling to Molly Matricardi 6-0, 6-1. Megan Pazdernick competed at number three singles for the Leathernecks, but fell 6-1, 6-1 to Lindsay Weideman. Jacqueline Baude topped Holly Conlin at number four singles 6-0, 6-0. Kristen Havelka challenged Tiffany Hottman at number five singles, but fell 6-2, 6-3. Finally, at number six singles, Ese Davis faltered against Emily Pierson 6-0, 6-0.

Doubles play was again controlled by the Mavericks on Friday. The Omaha pairing of Tran/Baude topped Western's pairing of Pazdernick/Berdichevsky, 8-3. Then it was Hottman/Matricardi defeating Conlin/Mejia, 8-1. Lastly, Weideman/Pierson beat Jessica Callahan and Jessica Theobald, 8-0. 

Later in the day, the Leathernecks and Jackrabbits matched up. At number one singles, Florencia Magni defeated Yessenia Mejia 6-1, 6-0. Elana Berdichevsky played number two singles again, but lost to Ffion Davies 6-0, 6-0. Megan Pazdernick was defeated at number three singles by Jenny Blackburne 6-1, 6-1. At number four singles, Beatriz Souza topped Kristen Havelka 6-0, 6-0. Ese Davis played number five singles, but was defeated by Tacy Haws-Lay. Finally, at number six singles, Tiffany Filipovich beat Jessica Callahan 6-0, 6-0. 

The Jackrabbits also controlled doubles play on Friday. The pairing of Blackburne/Davies beat Berdichevsky/Pazdernick 8-1. It was then Magni/Haws-Lay for South Dakota State that would defeat Conlin/Mejia 8-1. Lastly, the Jackrabbits pairing of Filipovich/Henry topped Callahan/Havelka 8-2. 

The Purple and Gold, will next compete on Friday (Mar. 29) and Saturday (Mar. 30) in more Summit League action in Detroit, Michigan. They will play Oakland and IUPUI on Friday and then South Dakota on Saturday.
