BLOOMFIELD, Mich. - The Western Illinois women's tennis team struggled on Friday (Mar. 29) during day one of the Summit League cluster in Bloomfield Township, Michigan.
The Leathernecks dropped a match early in the day to the Oakland Golden Grizzlies, 6-1. Then in the afternoon they fell to the IUPUI Jaguars, 4-0.
The first match against Oakland saw Karine Celis drop Yessenia Mejia 6-1, 6-0. At number two singles, Elana Berdichevsky faltered against Tamara Blum 6-0, 6-1. Megan Pazdernick fell at number three singles to Cam Sabourin 6-0, 6-0. It was the Grizzlies' Grace Keating defeating Holly Conlin in number four singles 6-0, 6-0. At number five singles, Kristen Havelka fell to Juliana Guevara 6-1, 6-0. Lastly, at number six singles Ese Davis won by default.
In doubles play, the Grizzlies continued their singles dominance. The pairing of Celis/Guevara topped Berdichevsky/Pazdernick, 8-0. Finally, the pair of Mejia/Conlin fell to Blum/Sabourin, 8-1.
The match against the Jaguars in the afternoon saw more of the same for the Leathernecks. Western struggled in singles play with Mejia falling to Shelby Hullett of IUPUI at number one singles, 6-0, 6-0. Berdichevsky dropped the number two singles match to Vanessa Whyte 6-0, 6-0. It was Bobbi Modesto defeating Pazdernick at number three singles 6-0, 6-0. Number four and five singles saw no results fromand 's matches against Jesika Bays and Rachael Bridgegroom, respectively. The match between Jaclyn Hyman and Davis was unfinished at number six singles.
In doubles play, the Leathernecks pair of Berdichevsky/Pazdernick fell 8-1 against Hullett/Bridgegroom. Whyte/Modesto defeated Mejia/Conlin 8-1. Finally, Jessica Theobald and Jessica Callahan fell to Bays/Hyman in a very back and forth and tough battle, 8-6.
The Leathernecks will take on the South Dakota Coyotes tomorrow at 9 a.m. as they wrap up their weekend in the state of Michigan. Complete results of that match will be made available immediately following the contest.
