MACOMB, Ill. -
Western Illinois Football participated in its first Saturday practice with a two hour workout in the morning (April 6). The Leathernecks closed out spring practice number nine with live 11-on-11 drills.

Head coach Bob Nielson thought the players settled in once the scrimmage got going.

"I think there were some good things. Offensively we settled in a little bit, particularly more as the scrimmage went on and we made a few plays. We did a 2-minute series at the end and made some plays on third down, which is one of the things we’ve been talking about from the very beginning," said the first-year head coach. "Defensively our front seven I think is pretty good. We struggled early in the scrimmage but then we settled in. Our offensive guys improved as the scrimmage went on and saw that in some of the redzone work we did."

Western also worked out the for the first time in the early morning hours on Friday morning, and Nielson stated that the squad worked on many of the things that took place live on Saturday.

"Yesterday was really a light workout, trying to rep some things that we were going to do in the scrimmage to see if we couldn’t time them a little bit better. I think we practiced well today, it was a step in the right direction," said Nielson. "We are really going to focus on trying to get better on the things that we’ve got in over these last 5-6 workouts, and not worry about getting too much more in."

The team will have the remainder of the weekend off and return to action on Monday afternoon.
