Game #1 Western Illinois 9, IUPUI 1 (5 innings)
Tuesday, April 16 at 12:30 p.m.

The Fighting Leatherneck offense stayed hot throughout game one's entirety recording the 9-1 run rule win after five innings of play over IUPUI.

In the bottom of the first, leadoff hitter Sammy Marshall drew a walk, stole second base and came around to score on a Megg Kelly single to left field. After advancing on a wild pitch, Kelly came home on a Lia Romeo single to right giving the Leathernecks an early 2-0 advantage.

Teagan Walsh kept the offense alive in the bottom of the second ripping a leadoff triple to right field, the first of her Western Illinois career. Following an IUPUI pitching change, Walsh scored on an errant throw on a dropped third strike put out attempt.

IUPUI got its first base runner with a one-out walk in the top of the third and saw her to second on a ground out. Kelsey Rupert used a single to left to push a run across and cut the deficit in half 2-1.

Western got the run back in the bottom half of the third with a Romeo sacrifice fly to right that brought home Alex Pflieger, who tripled earlier in the frame. The three-bagger marked the first for Pflieger in her Leatherneck career.

After the Leatherneck defense retired IUPUI in order in the top of the fourth, the game was called due to darkness and was resumed beginning at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday (April 16) in Macomb.

The Leathernecks carried its offensive momentum into the next day adding two more runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning. Emma Jarrell, Karissa Kouchis and Marshall reached consecutively to load the bases on a hit by pitch, infield single and single up the middle, respectively. Briana Williams and Kelly capitalized on the opportunity picking up one RBI apiece on back-to-back singles.

IUPUI threatened in the top of the fifth getting runners to second and third, however, the Leatherneck defense used a ground out to end the Jaguar hopes.

Romeo led off the fifth inning with a solo home run to left to notch her third RBI of the contest to match her career-high. It was her fifth home run of the 2013 season and brings her RBI total up to a team-best 24. Back-to-back two-out singles from Jarrell and Kouchis kept the inning alive for Marshall who used a walk-off triple to put the run rule in effect and hand the Jaguars a 9-1 loss.

Leatherneck starting pitcher Kelsey Michelini (5-10) earned the complete game win in the circle holding IUPUI to just two hits and fanned three. In her five innings of work, she allowed one earned run. IUPUI's Jocelyn Oppenhuis (4-8) was tagged with the loss.

At the plate, four Leathernecks turned in multiple hit performances including Marshall (2-for-3), Kelly (2-for-3), Romeo (2-for-2) and Kouchis (2-for-3). Romeo drove in a team-most three runs, followed by Marshall and Kelly who plated two apiece.

The Leathernecks got off to an exciting start in game two of the IUPUI series, however, a final inning Jaguar rally handed Western a 5-2 final loss.

Megg Kelly followed with a triple, the first of her collegiate career, but was stranded in scoring position.

In the bottom half of the third, Karissa Kouchis singled, advanced to second on a throwing error and to third on a ground out. She then came home on a Briana Williams ground out to make it 2-0 Leathernecks.

IUPUI answered scoring one run on two hits in the top of the fourth to cut the deficit in half then tied the game in the top of the sixth when an illegal pitch allowed a run to score.

The Jaguars used a three-run seventh inning to break the tie and take the game 5-2 from the Leathernecks.
