MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois baseball played host to the South Dakota State Jackrabbits in a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon (April 5) at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium. Before the conference doubleheader the two teams finished the 2.5 innings of a suspended game from Saturday.

South Dakota State 5, Western Illinois 0

The Leathernecks and Jackrabbits concluded game two of Saturday's doubleheader on Sunday morning. South Dakota State got out to a 5-0 lead on Saturday before the game was suspended due to rain. Neither team would cross the plate after the game resumed on Sunday and the final score would be 5-0.

John White (3-5) took the loss in the game after throwing six innings on Saturday. The junior struck out three batters while allowing four earned runs. Nick Smith threw three innings for the Purple & Gold allowing no runs with two strikeouts.

The Jackrabbits scored their first run in the first inning to take the early 1-0 lead. SDSU then put two runs across in the fourth inning, one in the fifth and another in the seventh to make the score 5-0.

Stephen Bougher (6-1) picked up the win for the Jackrabbits in the game. Bougher struck out four and did not allow a run in his team best sixth win of the season.

Western Illinois 2, South Dakota State 1

Both teams combined for just nine hits in game one of the doubleheader on Sunday and all three runs came in the first two innings of the contest.

The Jackrabbits took advantage of an error to score their only run of the game in the top half of the first. Al Robbins singled to lead off the inning and came around to score after a fielding error for the first run of the game.

Western answered in the bottom half of the first inning with a run of their own to tie the game at 1-1. Dan Dispensa reached first after being hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a balk. Dispensa came around to score after Steve Kedroski hit an RBI single up the middle.

The Leathernecks put another run across in the bottom of the second inning to take a 2-1 lead which would hold up for the rest of the game. Neil DeCook singled and advanced to second after stealing his seventh base of the season. DeCook crossed the plate after Mark Garton also singled to put Western on top.

Pitching would be the story for the final five innings of the contest as neither team crossed the plate.

Tom Constand (3-3) picked up the win for Western after throwing 5.2 innings with six strikeouts. The sophomore allowed just one earned run and four hits. Brian Loconsole came in and picked up his record seventh save of the season. Loconsole is now in first place for most career saves at Western Illinois with seven.

Western took the early lead in game two of the doubleheader, but the Jackrabbits slowly got back into the game and eventually took the lead for good in the seventh inning.

The Leathernecks scored the first two runs of the game in the bottom of the third inning to take the early 2-0 lead. Tanner Glore, Jameson Henning and Zack Burling all singled in the inning for Western. Nate Ewing and Brent Turner also got on and both crossed the plate for the Purple & Gold.

SDSU answered with one run in the fourth and one in the fifth to tie the game at 2-2. Eric Danforth scored for the Jackrabbits in the fourth and also had a sacrifice fly in the fifth which tied the game.

After a scoreless sixth inning the Jackrabbits took advantage of a Leatherneck error in the top of the seventh to score the go-ahead run. SDSU held the Leathernecks scoreless in the bottom of the seventh and picked up the 3-2 win.
