ROCHESTER, Mich. – Fighting Leatherneck baseball could not hold on to a one run lead in game one of the weekend series with the Oakland Golden Grizzlies, falling 2-1 on Thursday (May 16). The Leathernecks jumped out to an early lead but Oakland scored two late runs to get the victory.
Leatherneck starting pitcher Aaron Michel threw 6.0 innings allowing just two hits and no runs while striking out three batters. Sam Welvaert and Alex Doty (1-2) also threw for Western with Doty taking the loss after allowing one run in one inning on the mound.
In the second inning Steve Kedroski hit his third home run of the season, and second in the last two games to give Western a 1-0 lead. The senior took a 1-2 pitch over the right field wall and now has four home runs in his Leatherneck career.
Neither team would cross the plate for the next four innings with the Leathernecks taking a 1-0 lead into the seventh. In the seventh inning Oakland cleanup hitter Robby Enslen tied the game after taking a 2-0 pitch over the left field wall for a solo home run.
The Golden Grizzlies then went on top for good in the bottom half of the eighth inning. Nolan Jacoby led off the inning with a single and came around to score the go-ahead run after Brett Impemba doubled to the right center field gap.
Logan Sparkman (1-0) picked up his first win of the season for Oakland after throwing one inning with one strikeout.
Neil DeCook led all hitters in the game with two hits for the Leathernecks. Dan Dispensa also picked up his sixth triple of the season for Western in the sixth inning. Dispensa is now tied for most career triples at Western Illinois with 14.
The Leathernecks and Golden Grizzlies will meet again tomorrow in another single game at OU Baseball Field. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. (CT).
