MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois worked out on another favorable weather day at Hanson Field, going through two-a-days for the first time in camp. The Leathernecks worked out in the morning and mid-afternoon on Tuesday (Aug. 6).
Head coach Bob Nielson saw more positives from his squad following the final session of the day.
“I thought we did a better job communicating today both offensively and defensively. We did some team drills where we tried to make it difficult both offensively and defensively, playing music, those kinds of things, and try to simulate game situations. I thought there were some good things in that regard,” stated Western’s first year coach.
Nielson also was pleased seeing the temperature reaching the upper 80s as the day progressed.
“It was a warm day. You like to have a little bit of warm weather during two-a-days just from the conditioning benefit it provides your team,” said Nielson. “I think our guys are in good shape. I’m not exceptionally worried about having to do more conditioning through camp.”
Just one week into camp, and with so many underclassmen currently on the roster, Nielson sees them having a better understanding of the system.
“I think a lot of our younger players are doing some good things. It’s hard for a young player with the number of repetitions that you’re getting, but I think they for the most part have a real good understanding of what our expectations are and what we’re doing… I think the returning players have done a nice job in that regard (teaching them during practice). They’ve really raised this new group, bringing them along and helping them understand their importance on this team.”
