NORMAL. Ill. - Departing senior left-handed pitcher Rich Mascheri (Wauconda,
Ill./Wauconda) signed to play with the Normal CornBelters of The Frontier League, which is part of The Independent Professional Baseball Federation on Wednesday.
Mascheri collected Second All-Summit League honors on Wednesday as well following a season which saw him post the sixth lowest ERA in The Summit League at 3.39 and struck out 72 batters, which was the fourth most in the league, in a team-high 90.1 innings with three victories. Mascheri is the first Western Illinois pitcher to be recognized since Travis Tolsma collected second team honors in 2008.
Mascheri ended his final season in the Purple & Gold with three solid performances on the mound. On May 5, the senior pitched a gem against IPFW with a complete game shutout (9 IP, 2 H, 6 SO). He followed that with 6.2 inning performance, allowing four earned runs and four strikeouts at Illinois State. In his final start for the Leathernecks, he picked up a win with a seven-inning, two earned-run performance with five strikeouts at South Dakota State.
He also picked up Summit League Pitcher of the Week honors on Feb. 20 following a seven-inning shutout, five strikeout performance at Georgia State on Feb. 17.
Last summer, Mascheri was named a West Coast League All-Star.
