SAINT LOUIS, Mo. - The Western Illinois baseball team notched their third win of the season Tuesday, (Mar. 12) against the Saint Louis Billikens by a score of 7-6.
The Leathernecks got things going early, putting up three runs in the top half of the first inning. Brent Turner scored on a wild pitch, which was followed by an RBI single from Manny Reyes to drive in Dan Dispensa. Jameson Henning also crossed the plate in the inning after a Steve Kedroski sacrifice fly.
After the Billikens tied the game in the third inning, the Leathernecks came back with two more runs in the fourth. It was a Joey White to put Western in the lead, 5-3. The triple for Dispensa moves him into sole possesion of fourth place all-time in hits at Western Illinois and puts him tied for seventh in career triples.triple that scored both Turner and
The Purple and Gold got solid pitching from starter Tom Constand. The lefty went five innings of two hit baseball with five strikeouts while only giving up two earned runs. Mason Pingel made a relief appearance, giving Western one innning with one earned run. Alex Doty also threw one inning of relief allowing one hit and striking out one.
Saint Louis again tied the game in the seventh for a 5-5 tie. The Leathernecks got a go-ahead run in the eighth on a Turner single to score Neil DeCook. The 6-5 lead wouldn't last long as the Billikens tied it again for the third time of the game in the bottom half of the eighth.
In the ninth inning, Kedroski doubled for the second time in the game which scored Manny Reyes to put the Leathernecks up 8-7.
Brian Loconsole (1-0) was awarded the victory in the game for Western. The senior pitched the eighth and ninth innings, giving up one hit and one earned run, while striking out two.
The Leathernecks will play one more with Saint Louis tomorrow, (Mar. 13) at 2:00 p.m. before heading to Springfield, Missouri for a weekend series at Missouri State.
