INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Fighting Leatherneck women's tennis dropped its opening match to Southern Utah 6-0 and fell in the afternoon matchup with Oakland 7-0 on day two of the Summit League conference cluster hosted by IUPUI. Western Illinois is now 1-15 overall and 0-7 in league play.
Match #1 - 9 a.m.
Southern Utah 6, Western Illinois Women's Tennis 0
Jessica Callahan led the Leathernecks tallying a point in her No. 2 singles 6-0, 6-1 loss, while her teammates were held scoreless in their respective matches 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles action, No. 1 pair of Callahan and Ashley Rettger fell 8-0 and No. 2 tandem of Megan Pazdernick and Juliette Schwartz dropped an 8-1 decision.
The Thunderbirds picked up default wins at No. 6 singles & No. 3 doubles to round out scoring.
Match #2 - 4:30 p.m.
Oakland 7, Western Illinois Women's Tennis 0
Juliette Schwartz battled into the third set before a winner could be determined at the No. 5 singles spot. She was ultimately defeated by a tight 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-6). No. 1 singles player Ashley Rettger and No. 2 singles player Jessica Callahan dropped decisions 6-1, 6-2 and 6-2, 6-1 respectively. Oakland held Megan Pazdernick scoreless at No. 4 singles and received the No. 6 singles victory by default.
In doubles play, No. 1 tandem of Callahan and Rettger picked up the only Leatherneck victory 8-4. The Golden Grizzlies recorded an 8-1 win at No. 2 over Pazdernick and Schwartz and picked up a default win at No. 3 to round out scoring.
The Summit League tennis cluster in Indianapolis, Ind. continues tomorrow (April 14) when the Leathernecks take on the Jaguars of IUPUI at 2 p.m.
