The women's basketball team faced Oral Roberts in the opening round of the 2011 tournament and was drubbed by nearly 30 points. Enter first-year head coach JD Gravina and what a difference a year makes.
Seeded seventh and squaring off against No. 2 (and soon-to-be departing) ORU, Western took it to the Golden Eagles right from the start and never looked back in the 83-71 win. The Leathernecks jumped out to a 13-2 lead, held a 22-point halftime lead and had four players score in double-figures to send ORU packing from the Summit League.
Valencia Kelly scored a team-high 24 points and Saule Kontautaite netted 22 (matching her personal-high of six 3-point field goals) in the win as the team advanced to the semifinals of the Summit League Tournament.
