3. Freshman Sammy Marshall is crowned Division I NCAA Stolen Base Champion
Sammy Marshall became the fourth softball player in the history of The Summit League to earn a NCAA statistical title and is the first to acheive the honor since 2006.
The Naperville, Ill. native's 45 (1.18 per game in 38 games) stolen base season also marked new Western Illinois and Summit League records for steals, and ranked her seventh on the Western Illinois career stolen base list after her debut season. She was a First Team All-Summit League selection and named Summit League Player of the Week on three occasions.
She tallied a game high five steals against South Dakota State on March 17, four hits against SEMO on February 22 and South Dakota State on March 17, and led the Leathernecks in batting average (.420), on-base percentage (.449) and stolen bases (45).
The shortshop also made headlines when she hit an inside the park homerun against Southern Utah on March 23.
