Western Illinois Men's Tennis Bested in Summit League Opener

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Western Illinois men's tennis dropped the Summit League conference opener 6-1 against IPFW on Sunday (March 25). The loss brings their record to 2-9 overall and 0-1 in league play.

Sophomore Ben Yue picked up the only win on the day for the Leathernecks in No. 2 singles play defeating his opponent (4-6, 6-0, 16-12). His record now stands at 5-6 on the year and 1-0 in Summit League action.

In No. 1 singles play, junior Patrick Hammers put up a fight in the first set but could not record the win, falling 7-5, 6-1. Senior Jim Capalbo put up two points in his first set at No. 3 singles and one in the second before his opponent could solidify the win 6-2, 6-1.

Sophomore Andrew Yopp at No. 4 singles and senior Jesus Roman at No. 5 singles were each held to one point in the competition, and senior Daniel Sweeney was shut out at No. 6 singles.

No. 1 doubles duo of Yue and Hammers battled hard but could not finish falling 8-7 (8-6). Capalbo and Yopp at No. 2 doubles and Roman and Sweeney at No. 3 doubles dropped their matches 8-5 and 8-1, respectively.

Leatherneck men's tennis returns to the court on Monday (March 26) in a Summit League clash with South Dakota State in Fort Wayne, Ind. The match is hosted by IPFW and first serve is set for 9 a.m.
