UMKC Ends the Post Season Hopes of Western Illinois Men's Tennis

MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois men's tennis dropped the final match of the 2012 season 7-0 to UMKC (8-15, 4-1) on Sunday (April 22). The loss gives the Leathernecks an overall record of 4-15 and a Summit League record of 1-4 and ends the hopes of a post season tournament berth.

Patrick Hammers gave his opponent Grant Fleming a hard time at No. 1 singles extending the contest to three sets before falling by a tight score of 1-6, 6-3, 10-1. In the No. 2 singles spot, Ben Yue tallied a point in each set but fell 6-1, 6-1. In No. 3 singles play, Jim Capalbo was defeated 6-2, 6-1. Andrew Yopp at No. 4, Daniel Sweeney at No. 5 and Jesus Roman at No. 6 singles were held to one point apiece in their losses.

In doubles action, the No. 1 duo of Hammers and Yue and the No. 2 pair of Capalbo and Yopp fell by a score of 8-3 to their Kangaroo opponents, while the No. 3 tandem of Sweeney and Roman were defeated 8-0 to round out scoring.

Yue ends the season with a team best 9-10 overall record, while Hammers played to an overall mark of 7-12. The pair teamed up at No. 1 doubles and had a total of seven wins in 17 matches, which also marks a team best. Capalbo and Yopp recorded four singles victories apiece on the year and four wins as a team at the No. 2 doubles position.
