MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois is proud to announce 2012-13 scholarship recipients. Kristi Tschudin of women's golf was awarded the Cathy Early/State Farm Scholarship and Alycia Thurston, a member of the cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field teams, was named the recipient of the Laurie Meyers Potter Scholarship.
The Cathy Early/State Farm Scholarship was established in 1997 by Western Illinois Honorary Alumnus Cathy Early, and designed to reward a female Leatherneck student-athlete demonstrating outstanding athletic and academic achievement. Recipients had to be at least a sophomore with one semester of undergraduate or graduate coursework remaining at Western Illinois, be a major contributor to her sport athletically and be a leader on and off the field or court.
Tschudin, a native of Swansea, Ill., was named to the 2012 Summit League Championship All-Tournament Team after finishing third and having the best finish of her season, recording a 223 (71, 79, 73). She played in a total of 31 rounds, carrying a stroke average of 79.1 per round and was a three-time top five finisher.
The Laurie Meyers Potter Scholarship was established in 1988 by Westerwinds athletics and Laurie's parents. She was the first female runner to represent Western Illinois in national (AIAW) competition, and was a member of the swimming and diving, cross country, track and field and field hockey teams as an undergraduate. After receiving her master's degree at Western, she went on to coach cross country and track and field. The scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student-athlete that has demonstrated desire, perseverance and God-given talents to be a winner in the spirit of competition.
