MACOMB, Ill. - Sunday
afternoon was the final game for Lauren DeWolf, Kristin Kuhar, Laura Lins, Nora
Potempa and the 2011 edition of Western Illinois (7-12, 1-8) women's soccer.
IPFW (7-9-1. 4-4-1) overcame a two-goal deficit to earn the 4-3 victory.
"Those four seniors were the rock of this team," said
assistant coach Mariana Sanchez. "This was the class that started with Coach
Guinn and they were the role models and the leaders for the underclassmen. They
were the best leaders the program could have asked for."
Potempa took center stage in the first half as she played a
part in each of the first two goals for the Leathernecks.
In the 9th minute, Potempa took a corner kick and
Amber Davis rose above the defenders to head the ball into the back of the net
to give Western the early 1-0 lead.
Potempa lined up for another corner in the 18th
minute and was able to bend it around the defenders and squeeze the ball just
inside the far post for the second goal of the afternoon.
IPFW answered quickly in the 20th minute as Lisa
Underwood converted a penalty kick to cut the Leathernecks' lead in half.
Chrissy Campbell found Sarah Hall with a perfect cross and
Hall scored with a header near post in the 31st minute. After 45
minutes the Purple & Gold were leading 3-1.
IPFW outshot Western 15-7 in the first half.
Just two minutes after the break IPFW's Lauren McCracken was
awarded a penalty kick due to a red card on Katie Condon. McCracken cut
Western's lead to 3-2 in the 48th minute.
The red card forced the Leathernecks to play one player
short for the rest of the period.
The Mastodons took advantage in the 50th minute
as Danielle Bishop found Tara O'Toole with a cross at five yards, which she
converted to even the score at 3-3.
O'Toole collected the game-winner in the 59th
minute on a fast break started by Brittany Climmons.
IPFW outshot Western 29-10 for the match.
Victoria Kappel matched her career-high with 10 saves while IPFW's
keeper Kristen McFadden made three stops.
"It was a heart breaker," continued Sanchez. "We come out
here on Senior Day and we started off extremely well but this type of game was
not going to be decided in the first half. Soccer is unique because we only get
halftime to make any adjustments. The second half was challenging and the girls
never quit and for that I am extremely proud of our team."
