MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois men's basketball squad earned an 82-48 victory in its lone exhibition of the year over Cornell College (Iowa) Saturday afternoon (Nov. 8) under first-year head coach Billy Wright.

The Leathernecks never trailed as they used a 32-6 run to open the contest, and went into the midway point with a 47-20 advantage. The second half was much of the same with the Leathernecks out scoring the Rams 35-28.

When asked what the exhibition game meant to his team, head coach Billy Wright stated that it's all about his team being able to experience the process of how to prepare for a game throughout the week.

"If anything we learned our game preparation. With nine new guys we want to do things the right way and that starts during the week. We want to be able to excel in their role and play the game the right way. Everybody who got in the game was able to do that," said coach Wright.

All of the players that dressed played, and 11 players scored. Mike Miklusak led WIU with 14 points, while both Garret Covington (12) and J.C. Fuller (10) both finished in double figures.

Seven different players also made up the team's 19 assists, and the same 11 players that scored all recorded at least one rebound.

Besides leading the team in scoring, Miklusak also grabbed eight rebounds, which tied for the team lead. Tyson Reynold also pulled down eight boards while Tate Stensgaard finished with seven rebounds.

Covington, Dalan Ancrum and Remy Roberts-Burnett all finished with a team-high four helpers.

As a team, WIU finished with more rebounds (46-28), three-pointers (13-6) and assists (19-11). Both teams recorded 17 turnovers, four blocks and nine steals.

"I thought we were able to get stops and that allows us to get out into transition. When I first met with the guys back in April, I told them if we wanted to play with tempo we must be a great defensive team. I thought we were able to get stops. We did a good job defensive rebounding and that allowed us to get out and go," concluded coach Wright.

The Leathernecks open the regular season next Friday (Nov. 14) at home against the Pacific Tigers. The contest is slated for a 7 p.m. tip.
