Leathernecks Drop Exhibition to Penguins

Western Illinois women's soccer was defeated 3-0 by Youngstown State on Tuesday (Aug. 12).

VALPARAISO, Ind. - Western Illinois women's soccer was defeated by Youngstown State 3-0 on Tuesday (Aug. 12) in the first of two exhibitions for the Leathernecks this year.

The Leathernecks fell behind 1-0 on a defensive miscue, allowing the Penguins to take the lead.

Youngstown State then scored on a corner and from the penalty spot to secure the 3-0 scoreline.

""The performance did not reflect a squad in which every player invested equally or gave fully from an emotional standpoint," said head coach Ted Flogaites. "The goals came from nothing, but we lacked the sharpness to prevent those goals. The performances have to start being indicative of what's inside a player's heart. I know it's 'just' an exhibition but I don't view matches like that and our players should never view matches like that either, and this is a bitter pill to swallow."

Western Illinois will finalize its preparations for the upcoming 2014 season with an exhibition against SIU-Edwardsville on Saturday (Aug. 16) at 1 p.m. in Macomb.
