Western Illinois Hosts The Summit League Cross Country Championships

Races set for 11 a.m., noon at Spring Lake Park

MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois will host The 2016 Summit League Cross Country Championships on Saturday (Oct. 29) from Spring Lake Park in Macomb. The Leathernecks will compete against conference foes Fort Wayne, IUPUI, North Dakota State, Omaha, Oral Roberts, South Dakota and South Dakota State, with the women's 6k beginning at 11 a.m. followed by the men's 8k at noon.

South Dakota has won the last two women's Championships, breaking a run of three straight set by North Dakota State. Western Illinois finished in a tie for seventh last year and has never won the event. However, the women did earn second-place finishes in 1993, 2002 and 2004.

On the men's side, IUPUI has also taken back-to-back Championships, but, South Dakota State owns four of the last seven league crowns. The Leathernecks finished seventh last year, having last won the event in 1991. Western posted back-to-back third-place finishes in 2003 and 2004.

Grant Kaiser heads the Leatherneck men, coming off a career-best 26:16 time in the 8k on Oct. 14 at the Bradley Classic. Lucas Lingle (26:29) and Keiffer Sexton (27:36) also posted personal-bests at the event.

Senior Madison Lefler competes in her last Championships, holding the best mark of any active female Leatherneck in the 6k, running to a 22:23 mark at the 2015 Bradley Classic. Meanwhile, freshmen Abigail Richter (23:10) and Nicole Beebe (23:18) posted their best 6k times on Oct. 1 at the Iowa Invitational Regional Preview.
