Fochs and big bats lead WIU to doubleheader split at St. Thomas

Mitchell goes 4-5 with 3 RBI in Game 2

The bats came to life and Chandler Fochs was on his game on the mound in the second game of a doubleheader at St. Thomas on Friday as Western Illinois secured a 11-1, seven-inning victory over the Tommies.
The victory snapped an 11-game losing streak for the Leathernecks, who bounced back after dropping the first game of the doubleheader, 4-1.

Game 2: Western Illinois 11, St. Thomas 1 (7)
In the second game of the day, Fochs led the way, tossing seven innings, allowing seven hits and one unearned run.
Fochs also fanned one St. Thomas hitter.
With Fochs in control, Western Illinois used some two-out magic to get the scoring started in the top of the second.
With two down, Max Slavens was hit by a pitch. Nick Mitchell and Dillon Sears followed with back-to-back singles, giving WIU a 1-0 lead.
In the third, two-out hitting was key once again as CJ Richmond walked with two down.
Derek Botaletto followed with a bunt single then Adam Juran would single to drive home Richmond.
In the fourth, Sears would walk with one out, then advance to third on a double by Kory Olsen. A wild pitch followed, scoring Sears.
In the fifth, Western Illinois broke out the big bats and broke open the game.
Juran would launch a solo home run and Mitchell would add a two-run blast, making it 6-0.
St. Thomas would score an unearned run in the next half inning, but Fochs would remain in control.
Chase VanDerGist would score on a wild pitch in the sixth and with two outs, WIU would strike again as Slavens singled home Richmond, making it 8-1.
Mitchell followed with an RBI single and Sears would add an RBI single of his own, making it 10-1.
In the seventh, the Leathernecks ended it early as Gage Cruz's solo home run made it a 10-run lead.
Mitchell went 4-5 with three RBI, while Sears went 2-4 and Olsen 3-5. Juran added two hits and two RBI while Slavens scored three runs.

Game 1: St. Thomas 4, Western Illinois 1
The opener was a pitching dual with St. Thomas starter Graham Laubscher topping Western Illinois' Jace Warkentien.
Warkentien tossed seven innings of four run, seven-hit ball while walking three and striking out five.
The game was scoreless through 3.5 but the Tommies would scratch across a single run in the fourth.
St. Thomas would take control in the sixth, adding three.
Western Illinois would put runners on base throughout the day but could not get the big hit.
In the top of the eighth, Nick Mitchell (1-4, RBI) would single, scoring Jackson Hugus (0-1, one run, two walks) but the Leathernecks would not get closer.
