Leathernecks Fall in First Game of Weekend

The team plays twice tomorrow, facing Maine and tournament hosts Chattanooga.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Western Illinois softball played the first game of this year's Chattanooga Challenge on Friday (Feb. 17), falling to the Maine Black Bears 8-1. The result moves Western Illinois softball to 4-2 on the young season with at least three games remaining in this weekend's tournament.

Maria Luna got the first start of her collegiate career as the team's designated player, with Savannah Rodriguez back in the circle just one week after throwing a perfect game. Maine was able to put runners in scoring position in both the first and second innings but the combination of Rodriguez and some quality defensive play kept the game scoreless.

In the top of the third, Georgia Rea made a highlight-reel catch in the Leatherneck outfield. After a Black Bear hitter popped the ball up into shallow left-center field, Rea laid out to make a diving catch for the team's second out of the inning. The next Maine hitter grounded out and the game was still level heading into the bottom of the third.

Maine added three runs in the fifth but Western got on the board in the sixth inning. After Rea walked, she advanced to second on a wild pitch and then third after Bella Alvarez singled through the left side, putting runners on the corners. With one out, Luna stepped up to the plate and hit a sacrifice fly to center, sending Rea across the plate and cutting the Black Bear lead down to 4-1.

Maine would add four runs in the top of the seventh to seal the 8-1 result.

Savannah Rodriguez went the distance, finishing with a stat line of seven innings pitched, allowing 14 hits and seven earned runs while striking out seven opposing hitters. Alvarez and Luna, along with Gab Drager, combined for the team's hits while Jorja Hudson (two), Drager, Luna, Rea Kaylee Ketcherside and Rylee Boone all combined to get on base with seven walks while the team left eight runners on base.

Western Illinois will play two games tomorrow, facing Maine at 11:30 a.m. CT and tournament hosts Chattanooga at 4:30 p.m. CT.
