Western Drops Non-League Finale

Mary Ellen McKee Stadium played host to the Iowa Hawkeyes who left Macomb with a 7-1 victory.

MACOMB, Ill. – Leatherneck softball played Wednesday afternoon (April 19), falling 7-1 to the Iowa Hawkeyes at Mary Ellen McKee Stadium. Western Illinois will play three games at home this weekend before hitting the road for its final six regular season games.

The Hawkeye offense came out rolling early with a two-run first inning, though Savannah Rodriguez and Georgia Rea provided some defensive fireworks in the second. After Rodriguez, who started in the circle, struck out two of the first three batters, Rea popped up with a rocket of a throw to catch a Hawkeye baserunner who was attempting to steal second. Iowa added runs in the third, fourth and fifth to build a 7-0 lead, but Western would not go down without a fight.

Rodriguez would lead off the bottom of the fifth by being hit by a pitch and Gabriela Drager singled in the next at bat to put runners at first and second, and the pair advanced on a passed ball later in the inning. Though WIU was unable to score a run in the sixth, the offensive momentum carried into the sixth.

Piper Foote led the inning off with a single down the line that bounced off of third base and Rea singled to center in the next at-bat. After a fielder's choice put runners on the corners, Maria Luna was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Drager stepped up and drew a walk to drive in a run, and that would be the lone run of the game for WIU as Iowa secured a 7-1 victory.

Drager would finish the game 1-2 with an RBI and walk while Rodriguez recorded two strikeouts, four hits allowed and three earned runs across four innings of work. Sophia Honse came on as a reliever to start the fifth inning and, after Iowa scored two quick ones on a triple and groundout, Honse settled in; she didn't allow a run the rest of the game to finish with a line of three innings pitched and four hits, two runs (both earned) and two strikeouts across 13 batters faced.

Western Illinois is back in action this weekend, hosting Kansas City at Mary Ellen McKee Stadium. A Saturday (April 22) doubleheader will commence with a 1 p.m. first pitch before the teams face off at 12 p.m. on Sunday (April 23), with a senior day ceremony set to take place prior to first pitch.
